FAQs
What is the Urbalive Worm Farm?
The Urbalive Worm Farm is a stylish and efficient vermicomposting system designed for indoor use. Created by Plastia, it allows you to convert kitchen scraps into nutrient-rich compost using worms. This eco-friendly solution features a modern design that blends seamlessly with home decor. The Urbalive system consists of multiple trays for composting, a base with a tap for collecting liquid fertilizer, and a lid to maintain optimal conditions for the worms. It's an ideal way to reduce waste and produce organic fertilizer for your plants.
How does the Urbalive Worm Farm work?
The Urbalive Worm Farm works through vermicomposting, a process where worms break down organic matter. You add kitchen scraps to the top tray, where worms consume the waste and produce castings (worm poop). As the top tray fills, you add another tray above it. The worms gradually move upward, leaving completed compost in the lower tray. The system also produces liquid fertilizer, which collects in the base and can be drained through the tap. This efficient process turns waste into valuable compost and fertilizer.
What can I feed the worms in my Urbalive Worm Farm?
Worms in your Urbalive Worm Farm can eat most fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, tea bags, and small amounts of shredded paper or cardboard. Avoid meat, dairy, oily foods, citrus fruits, onions, and garlic, as these can harm the worms or create unpleasant odors. It's best to chop larger scraps into smaller pieces to help the worms process them more quickly. Remember to maintain a balance of "green" (food scraps) and "brown" (paper products) materials for optimal composting.
Is the Urbalive Worm Farm suitable for indoor use?
Yes, the Urbalive Worm Farm is specifically designed for indoor use. Its sleek, modern design allows it to blend seamlessly with home decor, making it suitable for kitchens, utility rooms, or even living spaces. The system is odorless when properly maintained, and its compact size makes it ideal for apartments or homes with limited outdoor space. The Urbalive Worm Farm allows urban dwellers to practice eco-friendly waste management and produce organic fertilizer right in their homes.
Can the Urbalive Worm Farm eliminate odours?
When properly maintained, the Urbalive Worm Farm should not produce any unpleasant odours. The design includes a tight-fitting lid that helps contain any potential smells while allowing necessary air circulation. To prevent odors, avoid overfeeding the worms, maintain a good balance of green and brown materials, and ensure proper drainage of excess moisture. If you notice any odours, it may indicate that the system needs attention, such as adding more bedding or reducing the amount of food waste.
How many worms do I need for my Urbalive Worm Farm?
For a standard Urbalive Worm Farm, start with about 500-1000 composting worms (usually red wigglers or tiger worms). This amount is sufficient to process the food waste of an average household. As the worm population grows, it will naturally adjust to the amount of food available. If you find you're producing more waste than your worms can handle, you can gradually increase the worm population. Remember, it's better to start with fewer worms and let them multiply than to overstock your farm initially.
What are the benefits of using an Urbalive Worm Farm?
Using an Urbalive Worm Farm offers numerous benefits. It reduces household waste by recycling kitchen scraps, lowering your environmental impact. The process produces nutrient-rich compost and liquid fertilizer, perfect for nourishing plants and gardens. It's a space-efficient solution for urban composting, suitable for apartments or homes without outdoor space. The Urbalive's stylish design makes it an attractive addition to your home. Additionally, maintaining a worm farm can be an educational and engaging activity for both adults and children.
