Terrarium Setup
- Container Type: Prefers an open terrarium rather than a closed one. Sempervivum plants prefer good air circulation and can suffer from excess humidity, which is typical of closed terrariums.
- Drainage Layer: Start with a layer of small pebbles or gravel at the bottom of the terrarium to create drainage. This helps prevent root rot by keeping the roots away from standing water.
- Charcoal Layer: Add a thin layer of activated charcoal above the drainage layer. This helps to filter the air and prevents odor build-up.
- Soil Layer: Use a well-draining succulent or cactus soil mix.
Light Requirements
- Light: Place the terrarium in a location that receives bright, indirect light. Sempervivum needs plenty of sunlight to thrive, but direct sunlight through glass can be too intense and may scorch the leaves. If you notice the plants stretching or changing color, they may not be getting enough light.
- Artificial Light: If natural light is insufficient, you can supplement with a grow light. Choose a full-spectrum LED grow light and place it close to the terrarium.
Pruning and Maintenance
- Removing Dead Leaves: As the Sempervivum grows, some lower leaves may die off. Remove these leaves to prevent decay, which can attract pests or cause disease.
Watering
- Watering Schedule: Water sparingly. Sempervivum are drought-tolerant and prefer to dry out between waterings. In a terrarium, less water is needed due to the lack of evaporation. Typically, watering once every 2-3 weeks is sufficient.
- Watering Method: Use a spray bottle or a small watering can with a narrow spout to water the base of the plants. Avoid getting water on the leaves, as this can lead to rot.
- Signs of Overwatering: Watch for yellowing leaves or mushy textures—these are signs of overwatering. If this occurs, reduce watering frequency and ensure the soil is completely dry before the next watering.
