Japanese Holly 30cm - 875

The Japanese holly bonsai tree (Ilex crenata) can be kept indoors or out. It is cultivated for bonsai because of its very small, dark green leaves and ability to produce small white flowers, followed by berries. It is an evergreen shrub that is usually found growing on mountain slopes and forest areas. Ilex crenata is native to east China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan but is now used as hedging in many countries and continents.

This beautiful Japanese holly bonsai tree is standing at approximately 30cm tall in a blue ceramic glazed oriental pot with a depth of 17cm and width of 22cm. This holly features a gracefully curving trunk with beautiful foliage.

Placement:

Japanese holly bonsai trees can grow both indoors and outdoors, depending on where you live and your preference. If placing outdoors, choose a location that receives ample sunlight throughout the day. Provide protection from the strongest sun as well as frost.
If placing indoors, choose a windowsill that gets plenty of sunlight. Avoid cold draughts or exposure to artificial heat sources such as radiators.

Watering and feeding:

They must be watered generously as soon as the top inch of soil gets dry. Do not let the soil dry out fully and avoid constant wetness. See our watering guide.
Only feed periodically during the growing season (March-Oct).

Pruning and wiring:

The Japanese holly tolerates constant pruning very well and this will encourage tight ramification.
Wiring a Japanese holly can be slightly challenging as the branches are brittle and the bark can damage. It is best to do this during the later spring and summer months growing period when the stems and branches are easier to bend.

Repotting:

Repot in early spring with a well-draining bonsai soil mix.
