Pest Control

Pest Control

No grower likes to see their grow room or tent infested with bugs & pests trying to ruin their hydro crop. Getting rid of these bugs can be hard work and in my opinion prevention is better to act on than a cure.

By the time you notice spider mites, thrips or aphids on your plants the chances are your room is infested with pretty much every insect and if you’re in flower this is a major problem as you can’t spray or treat your crop with pest control.

A clean grow room is essential for your environment thence keeping pests away and promoting plant health. After every crop plan to clean your room with Hyjo's pest control products even if you have had no signs of insects so it doesn't become a problem.

You need to clean your grow area and every item within, from the lights, to the fans and filters to remove any eggs that may stem about. It’s important to get into a routine of cleaning after every harvest for controlled and planned prevention.  I allow four days for the cleaning process of my hydro room and equipment after the harvest is done and use a combination of products including room clean and smoke bombs. The room is scrubbed from top to bottom every day for four days.

The best specialist grow room product for killing insects is Plant Vitality Killermite but you should never use it outdoors as it can kill bees as well. With Plant Vitality, I recommend using it every twelve days in the veg cycle at half strength as a preventative measure or if you see mites or thrips then use at full strength for pest management.  Don’t forget to wear safety glasses and gloves when spraying.

As an organic grower, I don’t use PV on my plants but I do use it when cleaning my rooms via a spray application on all the walls and floors when the harvest is done. On my plants, I use neem oil every seven days with two drops of washing up liquid added to the mix. This is to break down the oil if you use this solution all the way through the veg cycle, then you should have no pests at all which demonstrates one trade secret within the industry, plant care.

I visit a lot of grow rooms throughout the week and it is easy to transport bugs from someone else’s to yours.  Therefore, always wear overalls when you are in someone else’s grow room and shower before entering your own to avoid problems.

It’s also important to cover all your air in ducts to prevent insects being blown in from outside.  I use tights to do this and I tape them over the end of the ducting which works fine.  I change the tights after every crop.

I also like to hang sticky insect traps under every light in my room.  This is so I can identify any bugs that get caught on them with microscopes and magnifiers therefore giving you a visual confirmation that you have pests.

A grower is recommended to utilise the functionality of integrated pest management for preventative pest control.
